To
give students a balanced perspective, students are required to take
a series of specific public relations courses as well as a variety of
courses in business and communication. These courses fall into three
categories:
Public
Relations. Texas Public Relations courses cover a wide range
of topics, including writing, strategic management, public relations
principles, journalism and advertising. The diverse curriculum will
prepare students for the rapidly changing role of public relations.
All are necessary in preparation for a successful career in the industry.
Business. Students are required to take six hours or twelve hours of
upper-division course work in the Red McCombs School of Business, preferably
in Marketing and Management. A business perspective is an essential
ingredient in public relations. It is imperative that Texas Public Relations
students be knowledgeable in general business practices and functions. The number of business hours required by each student is dependent on which catalog they are required to follow.
Communication. Six hours of communication courses
outside of advertising and public relations are required. These courses
include a communication and culture class to give students a well-rounded
education in how to communicate within the corporate structure as well
as within the increasingly diverse publics.
