History

Public Relations courses have a history of almost 50 years with The University of Texas at Austin. In 1949, Alan Scott visited UT from Michigan State University with the intention of developing a public relations program. That same year, Scott was hired and soon began teaching introductory advertising and reporting courses. It was in 1951 that Alan Scott taught the first PR course at UT. While this was not the first public relations course in the country, it is widely believed that Scott became the first full-time public relations professor in the United States in 1964.

The foundation of the Texas Public Relations Program is its faculty. This group represents the successful blending of research-oriented academicians and experienced industry professionals.

Both bring current thinking and best practices to the program. The result is a timely and fresh perspective on the business that is firmly rooted in structured, academic discipline.
