Student Spotlight: Jermaine Affonso

Jermaine Affonso

Interviewed by Charissa Mureen

For all you public relations majors struggling to strike a balance between work and fun, consider Jermaine Affonso's approach. When he isn't studying, Jermaine works for the student humor publication The Texas Travesty and writes the weekly comic strip "Better than Average" for The Daily Texan.

What is your favorite thing about working for The Texas Travesty?

I really enjoy having an outlet to express my creativity, and it's a lot of fun working toward an amazing final product. I always used to think that I was really funny, but after I began working with some of the people on staff, I realized that I really wasn't. I now know that I have so much to learn and it's great to have the opportunity to do so.

How do you promote the Travesty to new readers?

The publicity staff does a lot to make sure all material is up to date online, and that all members of the staff promote the Web site with their social networks. We also spend a lot of time passing out our issues to students passing us on the West Mall.

What other creative outlets do you have?

Aside from all the time I spend bouncing Travesty ideas off my friends, I created the comic strip "Better than Average," which runs weekly in the Daily Texan.

How do you feel your creative work will help you in the PR field?

I feel like any role that you take that requires creativity can help contribute to whatever field you pursue in life.
