2016 Operation Jumpstart Scholarship Winners

A round of applause is in order as the results of the 2016 Operation Jumpstart Scholarship are in, and two of our Texas AdGrads have been selected.

As recipients of the $10,000 scholarship sponsored by the American Association of Advertising Agencies Foundation, Chelsea Tijerina and Gloria Ortiz join the ranks of a program whose legacy spans nearly 20 years of providing financial assistance to minority students who aspire to be art directors and copywriters. 4A’s Vice President of Talent Initiatives Carl Desir says the scholarship has many rewards.

“Confidence in their abilities, reassurance that an industry believes in them and proof to their families that they’re on the right career path are just some of the intangible benefits,” says Desir.

The recipients expressed similar sentiment, explaining that the scholarship is just as much for themselves as it is for those they love.

“Words cannot describe how grateful I am to have been selected as an OJS Scholar,” said Gloria Ortiz. “Receiving this scholarship means that I can continue to make school my full-time priority. More than financially, this award is an affirmation of my hard work academically and professionally. This opportunity also empowers me to continue my education with confidence and motivates me for my future in the advertising industry.”

Upon completing her degree, Gloria wants to remain in Austin and hopes to work as an art and creative director.

For second year AdGrad Chelsea Tijerina, “hope” is the single best word to describe the opportunity. Pursuing both a master’s degree and a portfolio program while working part-time is no easy task she says.

“In early 2012, my mother suffered permanent brain damage leaving her unable to walk,” said Chelsea.  “Since then, I have faced an increased weight of pressure to provide adequate finances for my education and living conditions. It’s been tough to deal with since the only way I can see my family is by buying a plane ticket. Scholarships are a tremendous help, and I am extremely grateful to have been selected for this opportunity.”

Once she completes her time at UT, Chelsea wants to take time off for family as she contemplates a move to the Northwest.

On the behalf of the Stan Richard’s School of Advertising, Texas AdGrad would like to congratulate both Chelsea and Gloria on their achievements and wish them the best of luck moving forward. We are confident you both will continue to make us proud. Hook’Em Horns!
