Commuting and Parking:
Garage Parking. When commuting, there are several parking garages around UT that sell permits to their parking. Trinity and Brazos are the largest garages, and the San Antonio garage is closest one to the CMA (the building where most of your classes will be held). A permit costs approximately $500.00 per year, and you can only park in the garage you buy the permit from. These permits can be purchased at each individual garage. It’s pricey, but at least you’ll know where you’ll be parking for the year.
Surface Parking. Alternately you can duke it out with the rest of the student body in “C parking.” These passes can be purchased when registering for class online. For more information about parking around the UT campus, visit http://www.utexas.edu/parking/parking/index.html.
Biking. A lot of students use bicycles to get around. Although there are some security issues and a bike chain or lock is necessary, it is a good way to get around. Campus contains special lanes on the streets designated for bicycles. Buses also have racks where you can store your bike, so you can take the bus to campus and ride to class. To register for a campus bike permit go to http://www.utexas.edu/parking/transportation/biking.
Buses and Shuttles. Take the bus. Students ride free with valid ID! Check out http://www.utexas.edu/parking/transportation for more shuttle and Capital Metro schedules.
Downtown. There is a free parking garage downtown at 4th and San Antonio after 5pm every night. This is convenient for the downtown bar scene and 6th Street area.

Grub and Joe:
Austin is peppered with kitchy little local coffee shops all over town. The Spider House, Little City, and Mozart’s are just a few of the best ones students prefer. Mozart’s overlooks a beautiful view on Town Lake and is right next to Hula Hut, a great casual Mexican restaurant.
Head over to The Alamo Drafthouse for beer, dinner and a movie. Where else can you enjoy the latest flick while chowing down on burgers, pizza and more? There are four locations in Austin.
The Oasis Restaurant on Lake Travis has the "best sunset in Austin." We recommend that you eat there at least once before you leave. The gorgeous sunset makes for a great background in Facebook pictures.
If you like having pancakes at 2:00am, Kerbey Lane and Magnolia Café are awesome 24 hour restaurants. There’s a Kerbey on Guadalupe in walking distance of the UT campus, and three other locations around Austin.
For the pizza lovers out there, Mangia Pizza is an independent pizza company that makes great Chicago Stuffed Pizza.

Other Stuff:
Austin, like the rest of Texas, is hot. Cool off in the many swimming holes, like Bull Creek, Blue Hole, Barton Springs and Pedernales Falls. Barton Springs is a natural spring that stays a cool 68 degrees year round, and a great place to escape the summer heat.
If you like the outdoors, Zilker Park has it all -- hike and bike trails, swimming, soccer fields, sand volleyball, kayaking and canoeing. There are even leash-free areas for your dog.
