From their bustling, urban headquarters at the Butler Dance Education Center and Community School in downtown Austin, Ballet Austin and artistic director Stephen Mills actively engage the community, dancers, and audiences alike. With a rich history spanning 53 years, a commitment to education as well as lifelong fitness, and acclaimed productions in Austin and across the nation, the organization is equally committed to the international craft of dance as it is to the community it serves. Internship Duties
As the marketing/PR intern, you will work very closely with Ballet Austin's Marketing Director and Manager of Marketing Integration, as well as the Managing Director of Schools. You will be given a combination of both long- and short-term projects to complete and a list of some of your duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Monitor, engage and utilize Ballet Austin's social media platforms including a
  • Facebook account, Twitter account, and company blog
  • Write press releases, short feature-like blog stories and newsletter articles
  • Monitor email, website and newsletter analytics
  • Create databases of information related to Ballet Austin, its productions and its audiences
  • Assist in shooting and editing video interviews
  • Archives materials into marketing, public relations, and advertising categories
  • Research a range of topics related to marketing of productions and classes

You will also be responsible for some general office work from time to time. Should the opportunity present itself, you could have the chance to create and develop small campaigns dealing with projects taken on by Ballet Austin or the Butler Community School.

Every day will present new challenges and opportunities, and you will very much be an integrated part of the marketing team.

Ballet Austin Interns are invited to attend both productions and open classes free of charge while interning with the company.

Skills Required

Some required skills for the marketing/PR internship are:

  • Having strong writing abilities
  • Being highly organized
  • Having proficient use and knowledge of the Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint specifically)
  • Knowledge of social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook
  • Retaining a general understanding of metrics and analytics

Should you have any unique skills, like graphic design, or experience working with a specific program, like Final Cut Pro, please be sure to include these on your resume as they will receive preference.

Hailed by Dance Magazine as "sleek and sophisticated" and "one of the nation's best kept ballet secrets" by The Washington Post, Stephen Mills works closely with the twenty full-time professional dancers, recruited from an annual 30-city audition tour. Mills' work with Ballet Austin has been declared "whimsical and fantastic" (Dallas Morning News), "effortlessly striking" (Dance View Times), and "meaningful" (Pointe magazine). Ballet Austin is the 15th largest classical ballet company in the country and also operates the largest combined training facility associated with a professional ballet company in the Unites States.

Ballet Austin Academy is the official ballet school of Ballet Austin and serves more than 900 students each year as one of the largest classical ballet schools in the country. Ballet Austin's apprentice company, Ballet Austin II, offers an opportunity for post high school, advanced dancers to hone their skills in a professional environment. Established in 1999 by associate artistic director Michelle Martin, Ballet Austin II is made up of 11 nationally emerging artists.

Founded in 2007, the Butler Community School (BCS) serves over 3,500 people of all ages and skill level with year-round classes in ballet to modern, hip hop to hula, and jazz to Broadway. The BCS is also home to one of Austin's top-ranked Pilates Centers, and offers a wide variety of instruction including yoga and Feldenkrais
