The creators of Birds Barbershop - award-winning, music-oriented salons that provide salon-quality cuts at an affordable price across Austin - are taking the company's "walk-in, rock out," style-on-the-cheap approach to hair products. In January 2011, the duo unveils Verb - a unisex product line featuring a paste for high hold and matte texture, a cream for hold with a little more shine and a hybrid product that splits the difference - for $11 retail. The three pucks (2 oz. each) are water-based, vitamin-infused and contain a natural UV protectant, all at a price that's a third cheaper than the men's hair pucks they had trouble selling in their own shops.

Having come up empty on their search for a high-quality, low-price line to carry in their stores, the Birds Barbershop partners spent the better part of two years developing their own. They wanted the opposite of what they'd been seeing, with an emphasis on bold design, simple language and most of all, none of the bad stuff customers previously had to pay an even higher premium to get. There are no sulfates (chemical sudsing irritants found in detergents and beauty products) and no parabens (preservatives known to mimic estrogen) in any Verb products. Verb is made in the USA, Earth and animal safe, healthy and priced for the frugal fashionista, with women's products to follow.

Internship Duties

• Help create and execute public relations programs to launch Verb, Birds Barbershops' new hair-care product line, including:
  Media research
  Story development
  Pitch calls
  Media mailings
  Influencer identification
  Coverage tracking

  Attend bi-weekly marketing meetings and contribute PR concepts/ideas

  Brainstorm / execute promotions for product offerings in the shops

  Assist with photo and video shoots as necessary

  Occasional office errands and print shop pick-ups

  Dispersal of marketing materials to restaurants, coffee shops, bars

  Assist the team with distribution of in-house orders as required
