Texas Advertising Welcomes New Graduate Students 2003

Incoming graduate students

The Department of Advertising held its annual new graduate student orientation and kick-off party on August 18, 2003. At the afternoon orientation, the new students were able to meet faculty and fellow students and learn more about the advertising program and the university. Following the orientation, the new students got a real Texas welcome with a barbeque at the ranch of Dr. Isabella Cunningham, Advertising Department Chair. The barbeque allowed for students to get to know each other, a number of second-year graduate students, and faculty members in a laid back atmosphere. After the barbeque, the new student festivities continued on Sixth Street to get a flavor for the Austin nightlife.

Sam Pierce, President of the Advertising Graduate Council, stated: "The orientation, barbecue and experiencing the night life in Austin provides the new students with a way to get acquainted with classmates that they will spend a tremendous amount of time with in the year ahead. It is a great kick-off and provides a day of learning, relaxation and making bonds before the semester begins."

The incoming class of 2003 consists of 80 new students, making the total program size 174 students. Of the new students, three are PhD students, and two are obtaining joint degrees in the LBJ program. Over 80% of the new students come from outside of Texas, representing over 20 states in the advertising program. As well, sixteen of the new students are international students coming from Brazil, Canada, Lebanon, Korea, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Russia, and Mexico. The new students range in ages from 21 to 35.
