Texas Advertising Students participate in AAF Stickell internship program

Four 2005 AAF Stickell interns working in California are pictured with Mrs. Stickell after meeting to discuss the development of a brochure promoting the program. L to R: Evan Nicholson (Chapman University, Toyota_; Katey Porter (University of Texas at Austin, LA Times); Kevin Braden (Northwestern University, Heil-Brice); Betty Lee Stickell; and Daniel Screptock (Ohio University, Toyota)

Two years ago the American Advertising Federation(AAF) and the Los Angeles Times moved their national internship program to the Department of Advertising at UT. The program was established in 1989 in honor of the leadership provided to the industry by the late Vance Stickell. Mr. Stickell was a marketing executive with the Times, former President of AAF, a member of the Advertising Hall of Frame, and active in civic affairs both locally in Los Angeles and nationally.

This AAF Stickell program places students who have been identified by AAF college chapter advisors as the most outstanding at their university with host companies from across the country. This year 46 students were nominated by their faculty advisors and 16 were selected by the Stickell Advisory Board to receive a summer internship.

Each year the Stickell interns as a group produce a brochure describing the program. This publication is printed by the Los Angeles Times and used to recruit host companies for the following year. This year, a UT ad major who is interning at the Los Angeles Times, Katey Porter, is editing this publication.

Ms. Porter is one of two students from our department who are completing an internship through the AAF Stickell program. The other is MA student David Roth who is interning at McCann-Erickson in New York City. David is an aspiring copywriter.

Dr. John Murphy is the program coordinator of this program. The host companies participating this year are: Los Angeles Times, 7-Eleven, Toyota (2 interns), Valassis, Newsday, Wall Street Journal, Heil-Brice, The Richards Group, Houston Chronicle, GSD&M, Slingshot, Leo Burnett, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, McCann-Erikson, and DDB NY.
