Department of Advertising Welcomed Dr. Larry Samuel
Dr. Larry Samuel is the president of New York City-based Culture Planning, whose mission is to advise Fortune 500 companies and leading advertising agencies how to become more culturally fluent. Dr. Samuel holds a Ph.D. in American Studies, an M.A. in English from the University of Minnesota, and an M.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Georgia. He has also taught courses in American Studies and Consumer Culture and was a 1994 Smithsonian Institute Fellow.
In addition to professional and academic life, Dr. Samuel has authored several books including "Pledging Allegiance: American Identity and the Bond Drive of World War 11," "563 Stupid Things People Do To Mess Up Their Lives," and "Brought to You By: Postwar Television Advertising and the American Dream."
Dr. Samuel spoke at the University of Texas on November 14th in WEL 1.308 at 6:00pm. The title of his talk "Brought to You By: Postwar Television Advertising and the American Dream," offered a unique slant on the intersection of American culture and commercial advertising. Dr. Samuel also augmented his presentation with some rarely seen examples of early television commercials.
