Fun Fun Fun Fest lives up to its name for more than just music

This weekend's fifth annual Fun Fun Fun Fest featured some great music: Devin the Dude, Slick Rick, Gwar, Strike Anywhere, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Bad Religion, MGMT, RJD2 ... and the list goes on.

But one of the things that makes the festival distinct in a crowded market is all the activities that supplement the music.

One table promoted shaving mustaches, another sponsored random products like the Stanley Thermos. Some stages had stand-up comics in between bands.

The fest also provided a space for local artists and merchants who could add something to the vibe.

Austin's Find and Grind Skate Shop spent the opening day of the festival building a skateboard ramp for local skateboarders. This gave attendees a chance to skate and listen to some great music at the same time.

"The process of actually getting the ramp to the festival and building it there was the hardest part," said John Rodriguez, representative of Find and Grind Skate Shop. "But it was so worth it. The music and the people kept us going."

Right next door to the skateboard ramp was Jim Mossman's art tent, called Fun Fun Fun Art, or FFFArt for short. Festival go-ers could see all of this Austin artist's work on display and had the option to purchase some of his masterpieces.

"Being able to showcase my artwork here was one of the best experiences of my life," said Mossman. "People are so excited and open minded to anything. I've sold a few pieces and got to hear some great music at the same time. What more can I ask for?"

Fun Fun Fun Fest was held at Waterloo Park, from Friday, Nov. 5, to Sunday, Nov. 7. Now in its fifth year, it made its debut in 2006 as an ode to underground music, showcasing many acts regardless of what the mainstream media said about them. Starting out as a show for a few touring acts and local bands, the festival became an instant hit among fans.

The music, which can be heard on four stages, falls into many genres, including punk/hardcore, indie rock and hip hop/DJ.

At the price of $1 per act, when you average out the cost, FunFunFun Fest is an inexpensive way to discover new music or rediscover old favorites.
