Student Spotlight -- Megan Ridgway

Interviewed by Catherine Mitchell, Dasha Chichasova and Qendresa Baca

Public relations junior Megan Ridgway is a Longhorn at heart but gained a world of cultural experiences growing up in Bangkok. This summer, Megan plans to return to Southeast Asia, where she will intern in the fast-paced city of Hong Kong.

What are you most looking forward to about working abroad this summer?

Well, I normally go back to Bangkok to visit my friends and family over the school holidays. But since I'll be spending the summer in Hong Kong, I'm probably most excited to experience the Chinese culture. While I have become accustomed to many Southeast Asian cultures, the Chinese culture has always interested me, especially in such a modern city as Hong Kong. I'm also looking forward to gaining valuable work experience in one of the largest and fastest growing markets in the world.

What kind of public relations work do you intend to do there?

Right now, I'm not sure of the exact company that I will be working for in Hong Kong. But fashion has always been one of my passions and I would love to work in the fashion public relations industry. Right now, I'm working on getting a public relations internship with a fashion publication or designer.

How has growing up oversees shaped your experience at UT?

I feel that living oversees has really helped me to connect with so many different kinds of people. When I came to UT, I didn't know anyone else going to school here and I was worried about the reverse culture shock I would experience moving back to the U.S. It was hard to adjust at first, but in the end, I've become friends with so many great people from all different backgrounds at UT.

Do you have any advice for students that are interested in traveling abroad?

Definitely take any opportunity to travel abroad. UT has access to so many great study abroad programs and traveling overseas is such an amazing learning experience because you are exposed to different cultures. The opportunities to live and work abroad are endless.
