Student Spotlight -- Melissa Cox
Interviewed by Michael McAfee
Melissa Cox is a public relations senior with a busy schedule of just about everything, from promoting Austin's hottest band to doing Lady Gaga impersonations.
I've heard you do a good Lady Gaga? How did that come about?
It all started with a platinum wig from the United Kingdom. I wanted to dress up as Lady Gaga for a costume party, so I bought a wig off of eBay, a leotard from American Apparel, a couple accessories, and before I knew it I looked like a fairly convincing Gaga.
Last month, The University Co-op was looking for Lady Gaga impersonators to help promote a sweepstakes. A friend told me to apply and I was there the next day, in full Gaga attire. However, this time I wasn't at a costume party. It was quite the experience, and a little embarrassing at first, but I think it's important to consistently step outside your comfort zone.
What organizations are you involved with on campus?
I'm currently the logistics co-chair for Texas Revue, UT's largest student-run talent show sponsored by The University Co-op. The event is held each year in Bass Concert Hall and showcases UT's diverse talent. The planning committee is in charge of everything from recruiting acts and judges to holding auditions and budgeting for the event.
What led you to get involved with Texas Revue?
I was drawn to Texas Revue because I'm really interested in event planning and thought that being on the planning committee would give me a lot of relevant experience. I was never completely committed to a student organization prior to Texas Revue. I joined a couple of different clubs, but never stayed completely involved. I felt like Texas Revue would give me an opportunity to get involved in something I'm truly passionate about, which is entertainment, and particularly music. I'm also a very results-oriented person, so I'm very eager to see the Bass Concert Hall fill up with thousands of people and a diverse group of talented performers on April 16.
Do you have any jobs or internships, in addition to school and Texas Revue?
Right now I have two public relations internships. I've been with Giant Media for over 10 months now, so it's starting to feel like home. Giant Media is a public relations and marketing consultancy that specializes in real estate developments, small business and nonprofits. I was initially attracted to them because one of their clients is Art Alliance Austin and I wanted to help in the publicity and production of their annual art festival, Art City Austin.
Oh, and they have an office dog, Truman. I'm an obsessive dog lover, so it was a perfect match.
I'm also interning for one of Austin's most beloved bands, The Bright Light Social Hour. The group released their full-length album last September and was named Austin's "Best Indie Band" at the 2010 Austin Music Awards. They just finished up a Southeastern U.S. tour and are planning to hit the road again soon. They'll be playing at South by Southwest this year and were recently featured on the cover of the Austin Chronicle.
What advice, if any, do you have for younger students juggling school, work, etc.?
My advice is to be careful not to over-do it. It's easy to get consumed with too many different responsibilities. College is a great time to explore your interests and meet people, but don't ever let it end there. I feel like students are sometimes under the impression that college is the only time they have, and they need to figure everything out by the time they graduate. In reality, you've got your whole life to try new things. Always look for opportunities; don't expect them to land in your lap. I got both of my current internships by reaching out to people. Sometimes you have to create your own experiences; you don't have to wait for them to show up.
