Student Spotlight -- Shanna Oatman
Interviewed by Brittany Watson, Ian Lancaster, Jessica Farrar, Claire Rodriguez
Double majoring in public relations and English could mean too much writing for your average undergraduate. But senior Shanna Oatman says it's given her a chance to do writing that's both creative and practical.
What made you decide to double major in public relations and English?
I have changed my major at least five times since I started college. I had a really great English professor my sophomore year that made me realize how fun writing and discussing literature could be. Since I started college as an older student I realized that I needed to find a realistic application for these skills, and I think that public relations allows me to achieve a balance between creativity and practicality.
How do the two majors complement each other?
Both English and public relations are writing intensive. My English classes helped me develop my writing skills and prepare for the strict deadlines that my public relations classes require. Procrastination is not an option when you have multiple writing assignments due in the same week.
How do the fundamentals of the two majors differ?
Switching back and forth from the two writing styles definitely takes getting used to. When I first started writing for my public relations classes I had to constantly revise and rework my papers in order to get the heart of the story. There is no room for excessive adjectives and personal opinion when writing for public relations.
What do you plan on doing after graduation with your two degrees?
My goal is to stay in Austin and work for a local nonprofit. As a native Austinite I've become very passionate about helping my community maintain its unique image.
