Terry Sawyer joins Texas Advertising as Graduate Coordinator

Terry Sawyer joined the UT Advertising Department this semester as the new Graduate Coordinator. He takes the place of Virginia Hueske, the 22-year veteran who retired in December.

"I was ready for something more than administrative work. I want to help guide students," said Terry. With eight years in the communications school admissions office, Terry is already familiar with the UT system, some of the advertising faculty and the important role of the graduate coordinator.

"I want to continue with Virginia's legacy. I want to learn to really work with people and make it more than just a clerical position," he explained. Terry became close with Virginia over the past several years and she has even come back to train him a few times.

The Graduate Coordinator processes admissions, coordinates fellowships for the department and advises students on their schedules, among a long list of responsibilities. Currently, Terry is getting the hang of admissions and will begin training to coordinate fellowships for the department.

Stepping into a position that has not been filled in twenty years can be daunting. "I'm just a sapling," he joked, "I'd be happy if, in five years from now, I knew five one-hundredths of what Virginia knew."

Outside of work, Terry writes music reviews for magazines out of New York and Denver and for PopMatters.com. He went to school at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
