Texas Advertising Welcomes Guest Speaker Kathy Hepinstall
Kathy Hepinstall, novelist and copywriter, will visit the university this Friday, March 25th as the third speaker in the advertising department's Times-Mirror Lecture Series. Her talk, entitled "The Tenth Way into the House" on finding ideas and keeping them sharp, is scheduled to take place in the Flawn Academic Center, room 21 from 3:00 until 5:00pm. She will also be available for book signing following the lecture.
Hepinstall received her undergraduate degree at the University of Texas in Radio-TV-Film and a master's degree in literature from the University of Houston. In addition to being a novelist, Hepinstall is also an award winning copywriter in advertising. Hepinstall has worked with Fallon Advertising, TBWA/Chiat/Day, and Team One. She claims that advertising writing is helpful in her novel writing because "good advertising writing goes beyond the product and finds some deeper emotional resonance with the audience" which helps in considering "the narrative as a product and the characters and themes as the emotional benefit." Hepinstall is the author of The House of Gentle Men, The Prince of Lost Places, and The Absence of Nectar. The House of Gentle Men was chosen as an Alternate for the Literary Guild, Borders' Orginal Voices, and was number-one Los Angeles Times bestseller.
Other upcoming speakers in the Times-Mirror Lecture Series include Neil Powell and Josh Rogers on Monday, April 4th; Warren Berger on Friday, April 8th; Scott Z. Burns on Friday, April 15th; and Andrew Keller on Friday, April 22nd. The coordinator for this semester's lecture series is Dr. Deborah Morrison.
