At a recent presentation at the UT System Bauer House, Mrs. Rick Perry, Chancellor Yudof, Vice Chancellor Smith, Vice Chancellor Safady John Mack Carter, and Fran Zone gathered to recognize Ms. Laura Lebel and Andrea Goldman -- the recipients of the first John Mack Carter Scholarship in Media. Ms. Fran Zone established the media scholarship, the John Mack Carter Scholarship, named in honor of Mr. Carter. It is a graduate-level scholarship for women committed to creating "media that makes a difference", and Texas Advertising is a grateful beneficiary of this scholarship.
The scholarship honors John Mack Carter, presently Consultant to The Hearst Corporation. Previously, John Mack Carter had been Editor-in-Chief of Good Housekeeping from 1975 to 1994. Under his leadership the magazine won two National Magazine Awards. Mr. Carter was the recipient of the 1996 Advertising Women of New York Silver Medal Award for his professional and social contributions to the advertising and communication fields. Also, in 1996, Mr. Carter was honored with the Fourth Annual Congressional Families Action for Cancer Awareness Award for his ongoing commitment to cancer awareness. He was also the co-founder of the New York City Race for the Cure. Above all, Mr. Carter has been an ardent advocate of full equality for women. He is committed to helping women with talent in their quest to establish successful careers in Journalism and in Advertising. He received many honors for his work towards this goal.
