UT Advertising Department Hosts Advertising Education Summit
Advertising educators and professionals met to discuss the future of the advertising industry when the University of Texas hosted the first 2001 Advertising Education Summit on April 21, 2001. Educators from 25 academic programs attended the conference, which was co-sponsored by the American Advertising Foundation.
Other participants included representatives from the American Advertising Foundation, the Advertising Educational Foundation, Ogilvy & Mather, Dell Computers and GSD&M.
"This was an opportunity to have the major players in advertising participate in a conference that faced the big picture and was content neutral," said Dr. John H. Murphy. "We weren't pushing an agenda." Summit participants explored problems and opportunities facing education in advertising and the advertising industry, with emphasis on developing a common sense of direction for educators.
UT president Larry Faulkner and American Advertising Foundation president Wally Synder began the summit and were followed by presentations from practitioners and academics. Participants then divided into groups for a breakout session to discuss curricula, student placement, faculty issues, student recruitment, industry relations and funding. The groups then presented their conclusions that will be summarized in a white paper later this year. For more information, contact Dr. John Murphy at (512) 471-1101. (04/01/02)
