UT Alumni Receive New Positions at Mother and Crispin Porter & Bogusky
Rossana Bardales, University of Texas Advertising graduate (1996), and Tim Roper, University of Texas Radio Television Film graduate (1984) and Advertising Creative Sequence (1991), are two alumni that have found success in the advertising industry. Rossana, who completed the Creative Portfolio Program at UT, has recently accepted the position of Senior Art Director/Associate Creative Director at Mother, a leading advertising agency in London. Tim has accepted the position of Creative Director at Crispin Porter & Bogusky (CP+B) where he will run the LA office's creative department and work with the Managing Director to grow the business.
Rossana began her career in advertising as an intern at Ground Zero in LA. In 1996 she joined Cliff Freeman & Partners where she rose from Junior Art Director to Senior Art Director to Associate Creative Director. In 2001, Rossana won a Grand Prix at the Cannes Lion for the Fox Sports TV Campaign. Rossana decided to move from Cliff Freeman to Mother because of their revolutionary style and ideas. She states, "They are creating a niche for themselves of what they believe advertising's future should be which right now is very exciting, especially when, in some markets, advertising has nowhere to go... who wouldn't want to be a part of that?"
After a few years as a script writer, Tim was drawn into advertising after viewing Advertising's One Show Annual. Upon completion of the Creative Sequence at UT in 1991, he worked for three years at The Richards Group in Dallas. He then moved to a small agency in Florida and worked with renowned Creative Director Mike Tesch. Tim spent another four years at CP+B in Miami and was promoted to Associate Creative Director. After leaving to spend two years at Mullen, Tim moved back to CP+B, missing their fearless culture. Of his new position, Tim states, "I love the challenge, being associated with a killer agency brand and the huge, huge amount of potential."
Tim and Rossana remain motivated and excited about advertising. Rossana states that she is motivated by the people that she works with as well as everyday life. Her passion for advertising and its challenging nature is what keeps her going. She asserts, "An ability to strike an emotion in 30 seconds has to be one of the hardest things anyone could ever do." Tim asserts that he is motivated by "the idea of shaping popular opinion in an honest way." In advertising he tries to find all the good things to say about a product, without deception or exaggeration. Furthermore, he says, "My inspiration comes from two places: Life experience and pop culture. The absolute best ideas always involve some sort of human truth - something people can relate to."
Both offer some valuable advice for advertising students. Rossana advises, "Don't give up on what you love, even if you're bad at it." She also advises students to get experience beyond the classroom. Tim, speaking to Creative Sequence students, says, "Don't ever consider the book finished. Keep adding, deleting, and improving until you've landed that ideal job. Then, get busy on the new book." Both hold very high standards for themselves and work hard at what they love, ensuring success for the future.
