UT Interactive Team wins a Gold Award at the One Show In New York
In early May, a team of UT advertising students--Jason Ambrose, Gray Luckett and Kris Wixom--won first place in the interactive portion of the 2001 One Show's Young Creative Professionals Competition in New York. Two more UT advertising students--Charla Olmsted and Dalel Serda--were given honorable mentions in the One Show Student Competition. In all, [eight] students from the UT advertising department and [two students from RTF] participated in the One Show from May 4th to May 9th. They were accompanied by a support team of six faculty members and doctoral students from the department of advertising.
The One Show, sponsored by the One Club for Art and Copy, is an annual awards event that recognizes excellence in the advertising industry. Besides the competition for advertising professionals, student events include the Young Creative Professionals Competition, in which teams compete in print, television and interactive advertising; and the announcement of winners in the One Show Student Competition, to which students submit entries earlier in the year. In addition, the One Club Student Exhibition showcases student work from around the nation, and participating students receive portfolio reviews from industry professionals. This year, UT students submitted 40 pieces for the exhibition. "The exhibition wall looked fantastic," says Professor Deborah Morrison. "And the portfolio review proved to us that our books as a collective were the strongest in the room."
The One Show offers advertising students a chance to meet industry professionals and to see the work of their peers. Doctoral candidate Kimberly Paul comments, "It's a great bridge between the universities and the advertising industry. The One Club showcases the newest generation of young creative minds available for hire." Especially helpful is the support given to current UT students from UT alumni who are now professionals in the advertising world.
Though the One Show events involved a lot of hard work, the students did manage to fit in a little time for shopping, sightseeing and enjoying the New York nightlife. "It was exhausting," says Master's student George Reynolds, "but we had a great time." Congratulations to Sean Thompson, David Horridge, and David Petr, part of the creative faculty who worked with the students to help make their work so successful.
