2008 magazine ads to be critiqued

Advisors of AAF college chapters are encouraged to nominate their most outstanding student by submitting a package of materials described below. Note that being nominated is an honor and should be listed on the student's resume as follows:

*2008 Vance and Betty Lee Stickell Award, selected as the most outstanding member,
________ University's student chapter of the American Advertising Federation.

All nominees must fulfill the following criteria:
-Be undergraduate members in good standing of an AAF college chapter
-Have attained at least junior standing by the time the internship begins
-Be returning to college in the fall term, 2008

This year, twenty outstanding students will be selected for 10-week internships at U.S media organizations, advertising agencies, client and supplier companies. The interns will receive a salary of $4,000 for the 10-week internship plus either a $1,500 scholarship to cover their travel and living expenses or a housing allowance provided by the host company.

Nomination Package Materials - Due by Monday, February 4, 2008

The nomination package for each student must include the following seven items:

1. A cover sheet (8.5 x 11) that includes the following information: 2008 AAF Vance and Betty Lee Stickell Student Internship Nomination Package for: (a) name of the nominee; (b) the nominee's college/university; the nominee's mailing address, email address, and telephone number; (c) the Faculty Advisor's name, title, mailing address, email address, and telephone number. In addition, on the cover sheet, nominee should include two short paragraphs in which they describe: (a) their university major and area(s) of emphasis in their degree program; and, (b) their short- and long-term career objectives.

2. A separate page that lists and briefly describes all: (a) extracurricular activities; and, (b) work experience of the nominee. Work experience includes all part-time and summer jobs, internships, as well as any campus jobs or counseling assignments. (List each chronologically, with most recent dates first.)

3. A letter on university stationary from the Faculty Advisor that addresses the personal and scholarly attributes which qualify the nominee to participate in the program.

4. Two additional letters of recommendation supporting the student's nomination. (These letters can be from anyone who knows the nominee well, e.g., a former employer, a classroom teacher, or pastor.)

5. On a separate page, respond to both the ad critique and the heroes essay question described below.

Ad Critique. Go to the Stickell website (http://advertising.utexas.edu/programs/stickell/index.html) and click on Nomination to view three ads -- Colorado, Raymond James, and Stacy's Pita Chips that appeared in a recent issue of The New Yorker. Click on each ad to view a large screen version. Select one of these ads to evaluate and respond to the following:

(a) Based on your own analysis of the ad selected, define the target audience for the ad (Maximum of 25 words total.) In discussing the ad, abbreviate Colorado (C); Raymond James (RJ), and Stacy's Pita Chips (S).

(b) Evaluate the (a) headline; (b) illustration; (c) body copy; and, (d) layout/design of the ad by considering both the strengths and weaknesses of each element. In light of your analysis, discuss why you feel the ad would be effective or ineffective in communicating with the target audience for the ad. (Maximum of 500 words total.)

Who are your heroes and why? Identify someone you know personally that you have looked up to and used as a role model. Also, identify a person who is widely known by the general public that you particularly admire and have used as a role model. Briefly explain what you admire about each of these two people and why? (Maximum of 300 words total.)

6. An official transcript of all the nominee's college/university work.

7. A current resume.
