Resources
In addition to the extensive library and computer resources of The University,
certain special resources provide unique support for undergraduate work
in advertising. Classrooms and laboratories devoted to research and creative
work in advertising include a copy and layout laboratory; the Computer
Imaging Laboratory, equipped with the latest computer technology for advertising
design and production; and videotape facilities for pre-testing television
commercials, appeals, and formats, for conducting package tests, and for
observing diagnostic and field research techniques in advertising.
Students also have access to the Sam Papert Media Laboratory, with data
banks of media and market studies for audience analyses, research on media
trends and competitive expenditures, and other studies; the Leo Burnett
Library, containing Clio Award winning commercials from 1960 to the present
and creative advertising texts and periodicals; the John Paul Goodwin
conference room, equipped for client and research presentations; and a
collection of over one thousand television and radio commercials available
for studies on commercial trends, comparative appeals, and cultural developments.
THE COLLEGE AND THE UNIVERSITY
Special resources on campus provide unique support for undergraduate
work in communication. Chief among these is the Jesse H. Jones Communication
Center, a three- building complex housing academic and production facilities
for the College of Communication and production facilities for Texas
Student Publications.
The center consists of:
- A six-level, 100,000 square-foot academic building providing classrooms,
offices, multimedia auditoriums, computer laboratories, other specialized
laboratories and training facilities, as well as the dean's office.
- A nine-level, 110,000 square-foot academic building housing studios
for training students in radio, television, and film production, as
well as production facilities for the Center for Telecommunication
Services, which operates the University FM radio station, KUT/90.5
MHz, the University Cable System, and the Texas Educational Media
Project. The building also houses public television station KLRU.
- A three-level, 25,000 square-foot building housing all editorial,
business, advertising, photographic, printing, composing, circulation,
and storage facilities for Texas Student Publications, which publishes
The Daily Texan, Cactus yearbook, and other student publications and
serves as directorate for KTSB student radio.
These facilities provide opportunities for programs of study that cross
departmental lines, that interrelate print and electronic media, or
that combine the resources of the College of Communication in other
ways not feasible in a single department.
Other Facilities in the College:
Center for Research on Communication Technology and Society
The Center is one of 80 organized research units of The University of
Texas at Austin. Its mandate is to study the economic, political, organizational
and behavioral impacts of the emerging information age. The Center's
research takes many forms, including analysis of contemporary research
literature, studying the innovation adoption process, field evaluations
of implementations, long range forecasts of technology impacts, and
communication policy studies.
Center for Telecommunication Services (CTS) The Center for Telecommunication
Services operates one of the largest of the nation's public radio stations,
KUT-FM, and is a major national center for the production and distribution
of public service radio programming through the Longhorn Radio Network.
The Center also operates an extensive campus cable system providing
availability of video programming, data and other informational services
throughout campus.
Computer Laboratory The Computer Laboratory is open to all graduate
and undergraduate students. It offers Macintosh and Dos machines, laser
printers, scanners, and other hardware, as well as a wide variety of
software for word processing, graphic design, desktop publishing, statistics,
and other applications.
Office of Survey Research (OSR) The Office of Survey Research
(OSR) provides customized survey research, including questionnaire design,
sampling, data collection, statistical analysis, and report writing
. Its data collection and entry are computerized with the Computer Assisted
Telephone Interviewing (CATI) facility. Employment opportunities are
available to graduate and undergraduate students in the areas of telephone
interviewing, data cleaning and analysis, and report construction. Various
non-English projects also require the participation of bilingual students.
