Texas Advertising Welcomes Chad Rea
With 20 years of industry experience as a writer, creative director and entrepreneur in the United States and abroad, Chad Rea is joining the Department of Advertising and Public Relations. Rea will serve as a lecturer for Portfolio 1 & 2 and Copywriting starting this semester for the Texas Creative program.
Born in Los Angeles, Rea jumped states during his school years, developing a passion for advertising at the age of 16 after a survey of billboards in Pittsburgh. He graduated from Texas Tech in 1993 with a B.A. in advertising.
Rea has worked on more than 150 brands including Starbucks, Pepsi-Cola Company, Google, Nike and ESPN. Additionally, he has won awards at the Effies, National Addys, The One Show and D&AD.
Besides borrowing from his experiences as a copywriter at The Richards Group and as a creative director at Wieden+Kennedy, Rea’s work abroad exposed him to media neutral problem solving, where a problem is solved as a team using any and all mediums necessary.
Having worked at Mother in London and KesselsKramer in Amsterdam, Rea came back to the United States, where he set up an unconventional advertising/design agency in Los Angeles called 86 the onions and also taught at the Art Center College of Design.
"Many of my former students are CDs and ECDs at leading creative agencies around the world,” Rea said. “Seeing their success and knowing that I had a small hand in shaping the way they think and execute creatively brings me a lot of joy.
Rea says he has missed teaching and wants to show students a new way of thinking and solving problems.
“Sometimes the solution might be to not advertise at all or to actually change the product. I want to impact the industry as a whole, from the ground up, and replace the old guards with multidisciplinary ninjas.”
