Career Fair Dos and Don’ts

The Spring 2018 Communication Job and Internship Fair is quickly approaching, and we know you’re dying to find that perfect position. Every year, hundreds of students attend to talk to recruiters and learn about great opportunities. The fair can be intimidating, but it can also easily be a successful experience with the right preparation. Here are some dos and don’ts to keep in mind while you’re perusing the fair to ensure that you snag that dream job.

DO research which companies are attending the fair beforehand.

Walking into the fair can be a bit overwhelming, especially with so many companies in attendance. Make sure you download the UTCCS app before the big day and make a list of the companies you have your eye on. That way, you’ll make the most of your time on the day of.

DON’T forget to print out multiple copies of your resume.

Your resume is your biggest asset at the job fair. It’s a quick and easy way to get your name out there, and many companies will be collecting them to fill their positions. Make sure you print out multiple copies so that you don’t run out right as you’re wowing a recruiter from your dream company. Career Services also offers extended walk in advising hours during the week of career fair, so take advantage of that to make sure your resume is in tip top shape!

DO dress professionally.

First impressions are important, and simply looking well groomed can take you a long way. The night before the fair, make sure your outfit of choice is appropriate for the occasion. Trying on your clothes beforehand can help you avoid a fashion faux pas the day of. It’s imperative that you dress for the job that you want.

DON’T disregard companies you’ve never heard of.

The fair is a time for you to discover new companies as well. You never know which companies may be harboring the perfect position for you. Take the time to look into all the companies before you go, and you might find some hidden gems.

DO be yourself.

As much as companies are evaluating you, you should be evaluating them as well. Showcasing your true personality and genuine interest is the best way to find a position that fits you. Once you have a clear sense of your skills and interests, you’re one step closer to finding a job or internship where you can learn and thrive.
