MAIP & MPMS

Opportunities for multicultural students

Advertising and public relations industries have made strides in recent years to recruit diverse and multicultural talent, giving students more opportunities to break into the field no matter their connections. Are you a TXADPR student looking into opportunities for the spring and summer? Here’s what you need to know about two of the biggest programs for students of color: the Multicultural Advertising Internship Program (MAIP) and the Most Promising Multicultural Students program (MPMS).

Many TXADPR students have participated in the 4A’s Foundation’s MAIP program over the years. This summer-long fellowship program places lucky finalists in internship positions across the country and provides professional development opportunities, from public relations and strategy to creative positions. Applicants must identify as a person of color, multiracial or multicultural, and complete an application with essays and a video to be considered.

Over the years, the number of students accepted to MAIP has grown, especially with the creation of the MAIP Virtual Engagement Program (VEP) in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though some internships were canceled, they included over 300 students in their modified virtual fellowship. As for the 2021 application, MAIP is planning for both virtual and in-person scenarios so they can provide valuable experiences for students regardless.

Though the Most Promising Multicultural Students program (MPMS) is on a smaller scale than MAIP, it is just as important. Hosted by the American Advertising Federation, MPMS honors the nation’s top multicultural college seniors and is open to AAF members. The application asks students to answer essay questions and express how they aim to make an impact in the advertising industry. Every year, the chosen students meet with top industry professionals for an exclusive recruitment event and receive an award honoring their work and dedication.

While the 2021 MPMS summit will be virtual and look different from past years, the week-long program typically includes workshops, industry immersions, a recruitment fair and on-site job interviews. Students can network, find mentors, attend workshops and visit agencies and companies to experience the work firsthand.

You can check out their websites for more information and their respective applications. The application for the 2021 MAIP fellowship closes on October 31st, and the 2021 MPMS application closes on November 2nd.
