Dr. Murphy is Professor Emeritus in the Stan Richards School of Advertising & Public Relations. Dr. Murphy has published four textbooks focused on using the case method to study the issues facing the management of integrated brand communication. His most recent book, published in 2013, is titled Cases in Integrated Brand Promotion Management. He has served as a consultant to a wide variety of business and government enterprises including ad agencies, media companies, law firms as an expert witness, public utility companies, museums and other enterprises. In addition to faculty positions in both advertising and marketing at UT, Dr. Murphy has taught in the marketing departments at Arizona State University, Santa Clara University, George Washington University, and American University.
For 36 years (1989-2024) Dr. Murphy was the Executive Director of the Stickell Fellows Program and he helped to place 416 students from colleges and universities from across the country in summer internships. He serves as a Mentor in UT’s Tower Fellows Program and is on the advisory boards of both the Stickell Program and Tapestry, a philanthropic foundation based in Austin.
Dr. Murphy earned his Ph.D. in Marketing and Educational Psychology in the McCombs School at The University of Texas at Austin in 1974.
