Andrea Lim is a third-year Ph.D. student in Advertising at The University of Texas at Austin, where she specializes in fandom and pop culture as sites of identity formation, cultural negotiation, and brand meaning-making. Her research examines how fan communities form, sustain, and police themselves across digital platforms, as well as how public figures, athletes, and brands navigate reputation, redemption, and relationship with audiences embedded in these cultures. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative methods, she approaches these questions from the intersections of media theory, cultural studies, and strategic communication.

Her current work spans several interconnected areas, rooted in a fascination with how fan communities make meaning, enforce norms, and build identity around the cultural objects they love. She examines sports fandoms and K-pop fandoms as distinct but parallel sites where these dynamics play out—exploring how loyalty, accountability, and emotional investment shape the way fans relate to athletes, brands, and each other. She is also researching how pop culture can function as a vehicle for shifting attitudes and building connection across differences, reflecting her broader interest in the social and cultural work that entertainment does beyond mere consumption.

Andrea is also a Graduate Student Affiliate of the Center for Sports Communication & Media. Prior to UT, she worked in public relations and advertising agencies in the U.S. and Malaysia for tech and consumer clients like Flagstar Bank, Bosch Automotive, Amazon Web Services, Cisco, foodpanda, Anker, and Alipay+.
