TXADPR's Guide to a Healthy Staycation in Austin

Following UT’s decision to extend Spring Break another week, some students will surely be left with a week off of school and no plans. Since it’s the university’s wish that its students, faculty, and employees use this time to continue practicing “social distancing,” TXADPR has put together a short list of fun places to go and activities to try that will not require much contact. Please keep in mind that although our suggestions are low contact, we do advise that you follow all updated advice regarding coronavirus as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

1. Relax indoors

Staying home is the best way to keep yourself and others safe during the break. With that being said, if you need to catch up on movies, Little Women, 1917, Midsommar, Lady Bird, and Hereditary are available to watch online! Also, if you’re suffering from cabin fever, grab some groceries and try to make a meal you’ve never attempted before. This is sure to bring fun and delicious results.

2. Try local fare

If you must go out, Austin is famous for having great food. Though it may be tempting to finally brave the line at Franklin’s, we’d encourage a less crowded option. Try Terry Black’s, another ATX barbecue staple. They may still have a line, but we promise your wait (and therefore exposure) will be significantly less than at Franklin’s. Some of our other picks for delicious Austin food are Ramen Tatsuya for a quirky vibe and great noodles, Oddwood Ales for amazing pizza, beer on tap, and a relaxed atmosphere, and Bouldin Creek Cafe for those of you craving Austin charm and delicious vegetarian/vegan options.

3. Enjoy the heat on the lake

Next to Lady Bird Lake is Austin’s famous Zilker Park. However, the park tends to get very crowded on weekends, especially if it’s warm. If you’re looking for an outdoor, low contact activity, try kayaking or canoeing on the lake with just a couple of friends. There are plenty of rental companies on the lake, and it’s good exercise too! If water isn’t your thing, we’d recommend the short hike up Mt. Bonnell. It can get busy, but it’s further away from the park. Don’t worry, you’ll still get beautiful views of the city.

We hope these staycation tips will help you enjoy your time off school so you can return refreshed and smiling. Until then, stay safe over the long break, longhorns!
