In recognition of Black History Month, the University of Texas at Austin is taking a
proactive role in promoting awareness and understanding of the issues faced by the Black
community. Through a series of events and campaigns, the university is honoring the
accomplishments of Black individuals and promoting social justice causes. One of the most

This past Sunday The University of Texas Advertising and Public Relations school held their ninth
annual TXADPR Bowl event, headed by Professor Gary Wilcox and student lead, Faith Potter.
With their guidance and support, a team of students prepared live tweets for all the Super Bowl
commercials to be posted while the ads were being aired. These tweets were very successful as
the page ended up ranking in the top 10 mentions on Twitter that evening and had a total of
52,463 impressions. Our team wrote and tweeted 70 tweets, generating 421 engagements, 295

Lia Silkworth has built a successful career as a media and marketing executive that has spanned more than 25 years. Ms. Silkworth earned her B.S. in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin and strongly professes that learning began in the classroom but continued throughout her career.  It has been a prestigious career, one that has been acknowledged with various media accolades and guest speaker engagements. Her knowledge and insights are also valued by the various boards she sits on.

1. What has been your journey from the program at UT to where you are now? 

What does it mean to pave your own path? Ask Roxanne Barretto Iyer, University of Texas (UT) alumni. Since graduating from UT, Iyer has proven herself a leader in a variety of different industries; beauty, digital media, and most recently Web3. When looking back on her career it is safe to say that nothing can stand in Roxanne Barretto Iyer’s way.

Last weekend, the National Communication Association hosted their 108th Annual Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana. Thousands of scholars gathered to present their research and connect with others from universities around the country. Among the attendees were three of our very own Advertising Graduate Students, Yifan Feng, Jana Landers and Madison Phelan. 

Why did you want to go to UT for your master’s degree? 

Twitter has undergone many changes since Elon Musk completed his $44 billion deal to purchase the social media platform. After the deal was finalized, he wrote an open letter to Twitter advertisers, where he explained his motive behind the acquisition. Musk explained that his goal for Twitter is to be a place that hosts healthy discourse on various beliefs and ideas.
